THERE’S GOLD IN THEM THAR HILLS

No, I’m not talking about the yellow stuff you get out of the ground, however, Colorado is a “goldmine,” so to speak!

I’m referring to the beautiful and intense yellows and golds of the Aspen trees in late September and early October. If you live in or have visited Western Colorado, you know it’s that time of year. It means taking a road trip, or bike ride or just a walk to enjoy the cool weather, fresh air, bright sunshine and bluebird skies.

Everywhere you look, the mountainsides are covered in gold. Aspens grow in groups, called “stands,” and are some of the largest living organisms in the world. From one tree, the roots grow out and little shoots are formed, which in turn grow up to be baby aspens, genetically identical to the parent tree. This is why you will see stands of Aspens in different areas turning at different times. The last Sunday in September is Color Sunday, a great time to get out and enjoy the fall colors.
